2016 - Another long but, dare we say, happy day at Garthorpe that was made all the easier thanks to an excellent team of helpers (getting harder to find) officiating in many different ways; plus setting up and clearing up – just over 100 people in all - not to mention the mounted Hunt Staff who endured a mammoth 6½ hours in the saddle.
We were kick-started with some fabulous entries: 132 horses and 57 ponies; better still, we had record declarations for the 14 races – 7 of each code - with a total of 82 horses and 49 ponies actually taking to the track
The latter were run with military precision and would have been spot on with timings but for the minor mishap with a ‘loose one’ and one rider having to be despatched to hospital.
A crowd of over 750 paying public enjoyed some quite excellent Point-to-Point racing with an outstanding field in the feature race, the Cawarden Mixed Open; and we had 2 races run over 2m 4f (4-6 yrs old Maiden and the Restricted), a divergence away from the standard 3 miles, which attracted keen interest and competitive racing too.
Notwithstanding Cawarden, we again received great commercial support from all the sponsors of races, fences and ancillary items plus all our advertisers in the Race Card contributing a significant sum. Our deepest thanks go out to them for their contribution towards making the day what it is.
As ever, it was a joy to see our wonderful hounds coming up the home straight. The Hound Parade is always a huge success and a great chance for them to mix and mingle with the crowd – it’s so important to keep the link between hunting and Point-to-Pointing…it’s dwindling, but this should have been a timely reminder of the connection. And, what a finish to the Hound Race! Again, thank you to the Kennels Team for making it work.
Word has got round that the Meynell & South Staffs is a great Point-to-Point to go to; it has good sport and a friendly atmosphere, just like our hunting! Above all we have also raised some useful funds for the Hunt whilst delivering a good day for so many.
In concluding; we congratulate Peter Bennett for winning back the WH Richardson Challenge Cup in the Meynell/North Staffs Joint Members’ Race at Sandon Park on Easter Saturday.
We remain on the equivalent date next year SATURDAY 3rd JUNE (Derby Day) and we look forward to welcoming everyone back to Garthorpe again. The hosting of the annual Point-to-Point meeting is a traditional part of the Hunting calendar with horses having been qualified to take part during the hunting season; many horses and jockeys progress to race professionally under rules.
The MSSH is privileged to stage its event at Garthorpe (www.garthorpe.com or @GarthorpeRaces) nestling deep within the picturesque Leicestershire countryside, just outside Melton Mowbray. This course is one of the finest in the country for both participants and spectators.
There is fabulous viewing, acres of space and there couldn’t be a better way to spend the day with the family – children under 16 come in for FREE and so do your dogs! Bring a picnic? Or maybe you don’t want the bother? Don’t worry, there is a wide range of food produce on offer all locally supplied and there is a licensed bar too.
