Despite the inclement weather the rain stayed away, with the game under way both teams battled it out for the first half hour giving nothing away until a missed tackle by a Howkins player allowed Simon Spencer to run in under the posts closely, followed by his centre partner Partington with a copycat break and run in.
As always the Howkins and Harrison team sported a big strong pack of forwards that tested a young and lighter Meynell pack in every aspect of forward play, superbly led by their veteran No. 8 Paul Stewart. However it was his younger opposite No. 8 Harry Grant that ran in two tries before the interval.
The second half got under way and still the match was played at great pace especially by Howkins scrum half Iain Long who side stepped three players to run the length of the field with a breakaway try. With legs tiring both teams made changes, with Nick Hutchinson ringing the changes from sidelines allowing Nick Alexander MFH and Mike Jones MFH to join the the pack. The Howkins pack battled hard up field sitting on the Meynell 5 metre line for what seemed like an eternity until a knock allowed a turn over followed by quick hands by the Meynell backs broke the dead lock with counter playback towards Howkins from Bain, Partington and finally Palmer downing the ball under the posts for the final say.
This concluded what was a thrilling game enjoyed by players and spectators alike. With the due rewards handed out under the darkening clouds the afternoons activities concluded in Harpur's bar in Melbourne!
I wish to thank everyone who made the day a huge success and look forward to next years encounter!
