MSSH Rugby Match 2015

A good crowd turned out at Barton under Needwood on Sunday 10th May to watch The Meynell Hunt XV play The Howkins and Harrison invitational XV.

With play under way it was soon apparent that our opponents had strengthened their squad with the line out and scrums being strongly contested, despite this we battled up field to create quick clean ball from a ruck saw the Meynell's rampaging No8 Harry Grant sprint 50m to put points on the board.

Not long after the restart the Meynell forwards worked up the the pitch before feeding the ball to Josh Macallion who after breaking two tackles flicked the ball out of hand to the ensuing Alex Moore who jinked his way to the try line.

With changes now being made this saw local farmer's son John Hutchinson to the front row and Will Forrester into the back row.  The Howkins team took advantage of the changes with quick hands and sharp feet allowed Tom Milner to start to put points on the board.  With both teams now making changes the battle amongst the forwards was relentless with neither pack showing weakness, after half time an over lap was created on the open side of a Howkins scrum led to Josh Breen adding to Howkins now increasing score line.

Rallying words from the now Meynell captain James Hutchinson inspired our team after the conversion, with hard running quick rucks and the Howkins team on the back foot Josh Macallion's quick thinking and accurate chip allowed him to gather his own kick to score unhindered under the posts.

The game now in the final quarter and both benches fully utilised, the Howkins inside centre's big hand off and determined running fed the ball to Tom Hilyer creating the difference between the two teams. Wanting to hold onto our winning reign we made a call for posts and a clean kick kept the game at a knife edge.  Howkins and Harrison's replacement Dan Cousins broke off the side of a maul to score in the corner despite the Meynell's defiant tackles.

This proved to be the last play of the game with the referee Shaun Godfrey's whistle being blown for the end of the game realising a very close defeat for the Meynell team.
